Highview in the Woodlands uses an individualized Montessori-based approach designed to stimulate residents' memories and senses through practical life activities.

Before moving in, new residents and their families meet with Highview staff for an initial assessment. During this assessment, we learn about residents' abilities and past and current interests. Our staff then directs an individualized program designed to help each resident meet their greatest physical, mental, emotional and (when appropriate) spiritual potential through activities designed to stimulate memories. For example, a resident who once was a carpenter may work with staff to sand blocks of wood. Those who were parents may spend time caring for baby dolls in our Nurturing Room.

Highview has a Snoezelen Room, designed to soothe residents by exposing them to various senses, using lights, color, sounds, music and scents to encourage mood balance. Originally developed in the Netherlands, Snoezelen Rooms have become a common and effective way to calm and relax individuals suffering from Alzheimer or Dementia-Related diseases.

Highview in the Woodlands' activity coordinator is certified in Montessori teaching through the American Montessori Society. All staff have completed specialized training in caring for persons suffering with Alzheimer’s and dementia-related disorders and are required to complete continued professional training.
